CAR PARK GARDENS REDEVELOPMENT
The ground staff will be doing extensive work to the gardens within the car park area. One of the main areas is the garden bed immediately in front of the club house. The bushes will be totally removed and replaced with a more visual garden. This is being done to improve the outlook and more importantly the safety aspect.
BBQ AREA
Due to the poor condition of the two BBQ’s the Board have decided that they can no longer be used and the gas has been disconnected. The two BBQ’s will be removed within the next few weeks.
The club has a portable BBQ and a hot plate in the kitchen that are both available for use.
PENNANT PLAYERS APPRECIATION EVENING
The club will be hosting a Pennant Appreciation Evening on Friday 13th August 5.30pm to 7.30 pm. The evening will consist of drinks and light finger foods and the presentation of trophies to the Pennant Player of the Year for each team. This includes two teams for Men’s Senior Pennants, three teams for Men’s Pennants, one team for Ladies Outer Suburban Pennants and two teams for Ladies SWDLGA Pennants. All pennant players are invited to attend the evening. RSVP by 9th August would be appreciated.
PINJARRA GOLF CLUB LEASE NEGOTIATIONS
The Board of Management is currently in negotiations with the Shire of Murray for the renewal of our lease. The Shire made their first offer of 5 years with a 5 year option. The Board voiced their concerns and a second proposal of 10 years with a 10 year option was tabled. The Board met with a representative from the Shire and advised that this offer whilst generous is certainly not suitable for the club to develop over the coming year. Representatives will meet with the Shire to propose a lease of 10 years with a rolling 10 year option so in essence the club will always have an ongoing lease.
CONNECTION TO DEEP SEWERAGE
The club has experienced a few problems with our current septic system and have investigated the option of connection to deep sewerage. The basic estimated cost is approximately $250,000-00. The Board is investigating option to try and achieve this initiative at the least possible expense to the club.
CURATORS SHED FACILITIES
The Board is currently ascertaining the cost to enlarge the current shed, improve the amenities, install a wash down bay, fuel storage & security, and chemical storage & security . Once all this information is in place the Board intend to seek grants to assist with the financial aspect of this project..
SWOT ANALYSIS
The Board recently held a SWOT Analysis. This looks at the “Strength” “Weaknesses” “Opportunities” and “Threats” for the club. Out of this a Vision for the Golf Club was formulated and four major GOALS were set. On the 27th July a second meeting will be held to look at the Goals and how to achieve them.
CHRISTMAS IS JULY
A very enjoyable and successful evening was held on the 16th July. With over 80 in attendance all enjoyed a very tasty 3 course traditional dinner. Santa did not disappoint delivering a small gift to all.
The entertainment was provided by Phil Inn. There was a great variety of music with Phil singing throughout the night.
All who attended are keen to participate in the next social event at the club.
Thanks to everyone whom assisted in getting this event off the ground.

THE BUZZ ON ENERGY DRINKS
Energy drinks have become increasingly popular especially among young adults (and children). Energy drinks contain substances such as caffeine and guarana and although many parents would not allow their young children to drink tea or coffee because they contain caffeine, many are not aware of the quantity of caffeine in energy drinks. The high caffeine content of some energy drinks is of concern. What do these drinks contain? Energy drinks usually contain ingredients such as: Caffeine: The typical drink provides about 80mg of caffeine per can (although this varies between brands). This is about the same as the amount of caffeine provided by an average strength cup of instant coffee, and about twice the amount in a cup of tea or can of cola soft drink. Guarana: Guarana is a caffeine-containing extract from a South American plant. It is the main source of caffeine in these drinks. Sugar: The amount of sugar in energy drinks is usually much higher (10 –12%) than in “sports drinks” (6-8%). Although sugar provides a quick source of energy, too much can lead to dental problems and obesity. Higher levels of sugar can also slow the body’s absorption of water, which make these drinks unsuitable for use during or after exercise. Protein: Protein such as taurine are sometimes added to these drinks. As the typical Australian diet is relatively high in protein, few people are likely to benefit from their inclusion.

HEALTH EFFECTS Caffeine is a ‘stimulant’ that speeds up parts of the body and brain. It increases heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature. In high doses it can cause hand tremors and changes in the hearts rhythm. Too much caffeine can have negative effects both on sports performance and on health.
Some people are especially sensitive to caffeine, showing symptoms such as tremors, sleep disturbances and stomach upsets following even small doses of caffeine. The following people should avoid the high caffeine intake from energy drinks: · Caffeine-sensitive people · Young children · People with heart disease
Some people choose to mix energy drinks with alcohol. When alcohol and caffeine is combined, it can be very difficult to judge how much alcohol has been consumed. The consumer is more likely to suffer the effects of dehydration including fainting, dizziness, headaches, nausea and loss of coordination and balance.
SUMMARY
Some energy drinks are a source of high caffeine content. Consuming too much caffeine from any source can have a negative effect on health and performance for the average athlete. Children, teenagers and caffeine-sensitive people should be discouraged in consuming high caffeine energy drinks. It is more beneficial to performance if sports participants follow a good training regime and a health nutritional diet.
